Varsity: 'National Team', 'University' As a dictionary meaning, the Varsity jacket refers to the jackets of the college and high school sports teams.
1865s
The varsity jacket first appeared on the Ivy League Harvard University baseball team in 1865. Ironically, it started with a thick pullover sweater, not the jacket type we know today. They sewed an "H" patch on the center of the uniform to make it easier to identify which team they were on, even off the field. The Harvard jerseys embroidered with the "H" patch were given to all players, but players who performed hot on the team could continue to wear their jerseys. Other bench players with poor skills had to be returned at the end of the season. In other words, the varsity jacket could be said to be a kind of report card that distinguishes star players.

Following the Harvard baseball team, the football team started wearing the "H" embroidered varsity jacket, and the rules were the same. In historic rivalry matches against Yale and Princeton, only those who could demonstrate sportsmanship could keep their clothes, and the varsity jacket, a testament to pride and honor, soon became a staple on campuses across the United States.
